In a surprising news, the American company and the global technology giant, IBM, officially announced its abandonment of the development, sale and marketing of face recognition technology, especially those intended for wide use in the field of security and surveillance.

The new decision came from IBM on the sidelines of a letter from the CEO of the company “Arvind Krishna” to members of the US Congress, where the latter indicated that the company is committed to ending all development, research and sales, as well as marketing of face recognition technology. Arvind Krishna said it is time to open a public debate in the United States of America about how this technology can be used for surveillance by the authorities.

Arvind Krishna’s message expresses a disapproval of IBM from the applications of face recognition technology by the US authorities for the purposes of collective surveillance, racial profiling, and violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Arvind Krishna called to provide guarantees for the safe use of this technology, and the company’s recent decision is related to the recent protests in the United States of America against the backdrop of growing racism after the killing of George Floyd.

The latest IBM announcement is expected to make some noise in upcoming few days!
